Christine Casey - DVTA and DVLNI
After spending about 8 years in the same area of
work, and having had the opportunity to gain qualifications and
a degree of expertise in a particular area, I decided that I would
like an opportunity to use and develop this expertise in a different
location.
I have worked in the area of training and development for the last
7 or 8 years in the NIO. One area that I have been particularly
involved is business planning, and the use of the Balanced Scorecard.
I was also fortunate enough to undertake and complete a Masters
in Business Improvement through the FE/ET scheme, which gave me
a very good academic, as well as practical, grounding in the subject.
So, rather than use conventional means of obtaining a transfer,
I completed the CPG interchange proforma, which was subsequently
sent round the NICS Interchange Partnership Group. The proforma
asks what competence I would like to develop, and how it will impact
on my performance on my return to the NIO, and how it will impact
more generally on the business of the NIO. It also asks what the
host organisation will gain from the opportunity. The interchange
Partnership is made up of an ever-growing number of public, private
and not-for-profit organisations.
I received inquiries from 6 different organisations: 3 were from
agencies in the DOE, one from BT, one from a housing association
and one from a youth enterprise organisation.
After finding out more about what each opportunity was offering,
I finally made a decision. I was looking for practical experience
in business planning and use of the scorecard, as well as project
management experience, and both the DVTA and DVLNI were looking
for someone to work with them to set up agency scorecards. They
were happy that I worked for both agencies, and to split my time
accordingly. The idea is that I can also look at ways to help what
are already ‘sister’ agencies work more closely together.
So I start on 3 May. I will have a laptop, a desk in the MOT centre
in Balmoral Avenue, (and the opportunity to ‘hot desk’
when appropriate in other buildings), and a number of outputs to
achieve within an agreed timeframe (I’m working on a probable
2 year secondment). I’m also working in an area that I have
an interest in – road safety.
I am also in the process about finding out more about the youth
enterprise organisation – Young Enterprise – who are
looking for volunteers to help primary school children gain a better
understanding of how what they learn at school relates to the business
world…
