Olivia Kirk - Marks & Spencer
My secondment/attachment was a two week placement with
Marks and Spencer. The brief was to measure the success of the management
of change in M&S N.I. (and compare to the handling of change
in the public sector) and the outcomes of that change.
I used the time on site during the secondment to research what change
programmes had been put in place by M&S and to carry out some
statistical research (face-to-face structured interviews with a representative
cross-section of staff in the Lisburn store) on the success of the
management of those change programmes.
I then used the information gathered to put together a report and
presentation on issues on the management of change that had arisen
from
the research. This took a few weeks working part-time back in my own
office. When the information was ready, I presented the results to
managers in the Lisburn store.
I found the secondment a useful insight into the workings of a large
private company and the issues that they faced when managing change
(very similar issues to the civil service, but with more urgent drivers
to change). I have been able to apply what I learned to an analysis
of
change within my department as part of a Masters course in Organisation
and Management and in the understanding of change as part of my day-to-day
work.
