HM Revenue & Customs
HM Revenue & Customs is a government department with responsibility for collecting billions of pounds in revenue each year in VAT, other taxes and customs duties. We also have a vital front line role in protecting our society from illegal imports of drugs, alcohol and tobacco smuggling and tax fraud.
In doing this, we:
- raise nearly half of central government revenue
- help people get their tax right
- help international trade run smoothly
- fight tax fraud and evasion
- deliver electronic government
- lead the government strategy to reduce the availablity of class A drugs
- fight the illegal trade of child pornography
- are a leader in financial crime investigation
- tackle smuggling of non uk duty paid goods.
