HM Revenue & Customs

HM Revenue & Customs is a government department with responsibility for collecting billions of pounds in revenue each year in VAT, other taxes and customs duties. We also have a vital front line role in protecting our society from illegal imports of drugs, alcohol and tobacco smuggling and tax fraud.

In doing this, we:

  • raise nearly half of central government revenue
  • help people get their tax right
  • help international trade run smoothly
  • fight tax fraud and evasion
  • deliver electronic government
  • lead the government strategy to reduce the availablity of class A drugs
  • fight the illegal trade of child pornography
  • are a leader in financial crime investigation
  • tackle smuggling of non uk duty paid goods.
